The women of Raghurst hold forth amongst themselves on the subject of the two posters above the sofa :

Karen : You know, those images make no sense up there together. Janis Joplin flamed out at — what, twenty-five? She’s in no way a role model.

Marie-Jeanne : Joplin was a Woman Who Ran with Wolves. She howls when she sings!

Dyann : Janis was a wild woman. You have to remember her time period.

Karen : Have you read the book? I have it out of the library right now. Dr. Estés actually uses Joplin as an example of a creative woman who falls into traps: the trap of leading a double life, and the trap of excess.

Dyann : She was a martyr to the female spirit. Society killed her for her creativity.

Steph : Anyway, we all live double lives. We have to, if we want any sort of societal or institutional acceptance.

Dyann : Not me.

Karen : It’s a pretty great book, actually. Dr. Esterhazy would love it. It uses folklore — old wives’ tales, fairy tales — to explore archetypes of femininity.

Steph : Sylvia isn’t big on archetypal psychology, actually. It just naturalizes gendered power imbalances.
